چکیده

Apples destined for export to Japan and South Korea are currently disinfested for codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), using methyl bromide fumigation. Restrictions and limitations imposed on the uses of methyl bromide have increased interest in developing alternative non-chemical quarantine treatments. It is imperative that the treatment is effective against codling moth yet maintains the quality of treated apples. The present study explored the application of radio frequency (RF) energy in conjunction with conventional h r a p f a a f ©

Radio Frequency Pulse Application for Heating Uniformity in Postharvest Codling Moth (lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Control of Fresh Apples (malus Domestica Borkh.)

A radio frequency (RF) treatment, with a pulse mode to increase heating uniformity, was examined as a potential quarantine treatment against fifth instars of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella L. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), in apples, Malus sylvestris L. var. domestica (Borkh.) Mansf., intended for export to Japan. Apples were exposed in water baths to 27.12MHz RF energy at 12 kW with a pulse mo...

Improving heating uniformity of fresh fruit in radio frequency treatments for pest control

Non-uniform heating of fresh fruit caused by variations in radio frequency (RF) fields is a major obstacle in developing postharvest insect control treatments based on RF energy. A fruit mover was developed to evaluate possibilities to improve RF heating uniformity of large fruit, such as oranges and apples, in a 12 kW batch type RF system. This fruit mover provided a means to rotate and move f...

Efficacy of Nitric Oxide Fumigation for Controlling Codling Moth in Apples

Nitric oxide (NO) fumigation under ultralow oxygen (ULO) conditions was studied for its efficacy in controlling codling moth and effects on postharvest quality of apples. NO fumigation was effective against eggs and larvae of different sizes on artificial diet in 48 h treatments. Small larvae were more susceptible to nitric oxide than other stages at 0.5% NO concentration. There were no signifi...

Radio Frequency Heating of Walnuts and Sweet Cherries to Control Insects after Harvest

Radio frequency (RF) heating has been explored as a potential non-chemical method to control insects in harvested walnuts and as a quarantine treatment for ‘Bing’ sweet cherries. Walnuts were heated to 50 to 90°C. Heating walnuts to 55°C or higher resulted in 100% mortality of fifth instar navel orangeworm, and heating to 80°C had no effect on walnut quality. Moisture content had a significant ...

High-temperature-short-time thermal quarantine methods

In this paper, kinetic models are discussed with respect to their uses in describing the intrinsic thermal mortality of insect pests. A unique heating block system was used to obtain kinetic information for the thermal mortality of codling moth larvae. The kinetic data demonstrated the possibility to develop high-temperature-short-time thermal treatments to control codling moth and reduce therm...
